Dr Kakkar a obtenu son diplôme de médecine de l’Université McGill (1999-2003). Elle a effectué sa résidence en pédiatrie au Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario (2003-2007) avant de poursuivre avec un fellowship en maladies infectieuses au Hospital for Sick Children de Toronto (2007-2009). Elle a également obtenu un diplôme en « Tropical médicine and hygiene » du Gorgas Institute of Tropical Médicine de Lima, Pérou (2009). Un fellowship de recherche en Immunocompromised Pediatric à l’Université de Toronto (2009-2010) et un Master en Santé publique-méthode quantitative à la Harvard School of Public Health (2010-2011) se sont ajoutés à son cursus académique.
Dr Kakkar s’est vu octroyer des subventions des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada et du Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec. Elle a été invitée à titre de conférencière à cinq reprises depuis 2013.
